Shopify Returns vs. the EU withdrawal button: why returns isn't enough

Shopify's self-serve returns and cancellations are useful, but they require a customer-account sign-in, have no statutory label, no separate 'confirm withdrawal' step and no timestamped receipt. Here's the gap, line by line, and what actually closes it.

Quick Answer

Short answer: Shopify Returns is logistics; the withdrawal button is a specific legal mechanism. Shopify's self-serve returns and cancellations require a customer-account sign-in, carry no statutory label, have no separate confirmation step, and send no timestamped receipt — so they don't satisfy Art. 11a / § 356a BGB on their own, and guest buyers get no login-free path at all. Keep Returns for logistics; add a compliant withdrawal button for the law.

Since 18 June 2026, Shopify has positioned its self-serve returns and cancellations as its answer to the EU withdrawal requirement. It's a genuinely useful feature set — but Shopify itself says it "doesn't automatically make your store compliant." Here's why.

The four gaps

Art. 11a requiresShopify self-serve returns
Reachable without a loginRequires customer-account sign-in (email + OTP)
Button labelled "withdraw from contract here"Generic "request a return / cancellation", no statutory label
A separate "confirm withdrawal" stepNo distinct, specifically-labelled confirmation action
Acknowledgement on a durable medium with date & timeNo receipt email carrying the content of the withdrawal and a timestamp

The first row is the one that can't be worked around: a guest-checkout buyer never made an account, so a login-gated flow leaves them with no compliant path. The whole point of Art. 11a is a function the consumer can reach directly.

What actually closes the gap

A dedicated withdrawal function that is login-free, carries the statutory label, runs the two-step form-then-confirm flow, and sends a timestamped receipt — logged for your records. That's exactly what this app ships, and it can still hand the withdrawal off to Shopify Returns afterwards so your logistics stay in one place.

Keep Shopify Returns enabled. It's complementary: the withdrawal button satisfies the legal mechanism, Returns handles labels, RMA and exchanges. On Pro, a confirmed withdrawal can create the matching return in Shopify for you.

EU Withdrawal does this for you

The login-free button, the two-step form, the separate confirmation step and the timestamped receipt email ship out of the box, in the shopper's own EU language, with every withdrawal logged. Free to start.
